Visiting Machu Picchu is one of the best things you can do while you are in Peru. as soon as you go there, you will be amazed by the hundred-year-old ruins of its glorious civilization, so much so that you will wonder what it was like to be here!
However, there are two famous attractions as well – Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu mountain for those who like a little bit of hiking. In this post, we will look at what is the best option for you – Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu mountain.
Huayna Picchu is what you see rising above Machu Picchu’s postcard images at an elevation of
2720 meters above sea level. Huayna Picchu is much more challenging than the Machu Picchu hike, however, it is the most popular of the two with 2-3 hours to complete both ways. As the hike is steep and narrow, you should take extra care when trying to do this hike.
Therefore, it is not recommended for people who have a low level of fitness and for those who are afraid of heights. As you go up, you will be able to see many Incan archaeological ruins and the beautiful Moon Temple. As for the views, you will be able to see stunning vistas of Machu Picchu Mountain and the Machu Picchu ruins.

Machu Picchu is not as popular as Huayna Picchu, however, it offers the most spectacular views because it elevates 3082 meters above sea level. As both of the mountains are located at high altitudes, you should acclimate to the environment to prevent altitude sickness.
It will take about 3-4 hours to complete the hike for both ways. The paths of Machu Picchu are wider, in the beginning, making it easier for you to climb up. However, there are no archaeological ruins like Huayna Picchu, instead, you will reach the summit with mesmerizing views.
So what will it be – Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu mountain?
Huayna Picchu is a great choice if you are looking for something popular, and to capture the beautiful views of Machu Picchu mountain and its ruins. There are tickets for 400 people available but they sell out very quickly. And as the hike is a bit more challenging and steep, you should be above 12 years old to go on this trip.
However, Machu Picchu mountain is suitable for those who like fewer crowds but enjoy spectacular views at higher elevations. There are 400 tickets for Machu Picchu too but they don’t sell very quickly like the ones in Huayna Picchu.
Machu Picchu is also suitable for people of all ages. So, it is a great alternative to Huayna Picchu if you want to experience the glory of Machu Picchu with your whole family.
No matter which hikes you will choose – it is always better to pack warm light clothing, wear good hiking shoes, and take jackets, trekking poles, sunscreen, sunglasses etc with you. Also, make sure to book both of these hikes 2-3 months before you plan to travel to Peru.
