Inca Quarry Trail is a lesser known but a rewarding one day trek in Cusco. This off the beaten track trek takes you to the largest stone quarry of Incas.
During the rule of Pachacutec, Inca empire was developed extensively. Incas witnessed the rise of new royal complexes like Machu Picchu and Choquequirao. Ollantaytambo was an administrative centre of Incas and Pachacutec was keen on developing the village. The Incas built forts, houses and many other notable buildings here.
Ollantaytambo is home to some of the impressive stone work in the whole of Sacred Valley. This one day Inca Quarry Trek takes you right to the source of these impressive constructions, the stone quarry of Cachicata.
We will be retracing the footsteps of Incas. Majority of Inca Quarry Trail takes place on the path the Incas took to transfer the stones from Cachicata quarry to Ollantaytambo. Infact, you will be visiting both, the upper and lower quarry. In these quarries, you will be able to see some pieces of finely carved pink granite stones called as cut stones scattered in a dismay. These stone pieces are a testament to a massive stonework project in Ollantaytambo that never took place.
Additionally, you will also be able to hike up to the Sungate (Intipunku). It offers a pristine view of the snow capped peaks of the Urubamba mountain range.
Cusco Hotel Transfer
0800 AM
We will be picking you up from your hotel in Cusco at 0800 AM. Then we will embark in our private transport to Ollantaytambo. The three hours road trip offers you a beautiful sight of the Sacred Valley of Incas.
Once in Ollantaytambo, we will stop a while so you could buy some snacks and water, if needed. Then continuing along the main road we will be crossing a bridge that connects the town across Urubamba river. Inca Quarry Trek begins here.
We will be hiking up the hill for two and a half hours fro 2800 metres to 3900 metres. Along the way, we will be stopping at a complex which was once home to the people who worked in the quarry.
As we will progress the Inca Quarry Trail, we will stop for lunch either at upper or lower quarry. After lunch, if you have the stamina to hike 450 metres further up, we can visit Inti Punku (Sun Gate). You will have an enchanting view of Mt. Veronica from here.
We will then hike back down to Ollantaytambo along the same way we went up. From here, we will transfer you back to Cusco.
They are simply the best. Jose Luis is a super nice guide and knows a lot about the culture and history. We did Inca Quarry Trek with them and do recommend this company strongly.
