Manu Reserved Zone Tours

Manu Reserved Zone Tours is one of our exclusive programmes designed to offer you a deeper insight to the culture and nature of Manu National Park in the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest. The five days tour takes you deep into Manu National Park.

Manu dominates a vast majority of the world’s largest rainforest – Amazon. It is home to native indigenous Quechua speaking communities. There are also countless species of animals, birds, flora and fauna.

The whole national park is spread in 1,532,806 hectares. The lush tropical jungle rises from 150 metres above sea level to 4500 metres. Manu National Park is divided into three zones – The core zone, Manu Biosphere Reserve or Reserved Zone and Cultural Zone.

One of the unmissable sights in Manu is the Macaw Clay Lick. It is a unique sight where hundreds of brightly coloured macaws and parrots flock in every morning to eat the clay. The clay here is rich in a distinct type of salt that helps them to flush out toxins from their bodies.

Manu is the most preferred destination in the Peruvian Amazon. Primarily because of its close proximity to Cusco which lets travelers experience the rainforest before or after their trip to Machu Picchu.

There are over 159 species of mammals, 140 species of Amphibians, 300 varieties of ants and 13 species of monkeys in Manu. In 1987, UNESCO declared Manu as a world heritage site.

Itinerary

Day 1Cusco - Paradise Lodge

We will be picking you up from your hotel in Cusco at 0600 AM. In our private transport, we will be driving you along the South Valley of Cusco, from the Andes to Amazon. As the journey is a bit longer, we will have a couple of stops.

Our first stop will be in Ninamarca. It is home to ancient Pre Inca funeral towers. Our guide will give you a guided tour of the site. We will then drive to Paucartambo.

It is a folkloric colonial town. There is an ancient white washed church in the centre of the town. People here dress in colourful traditional attire and continue to speak the native language – Quechua.

From here we will drive to a view point in Tres Cruces. From the view point, you will get a panoramic view of the Amazon basin.

We will then start driving down the hill to Manu National park. Our trip in Manu begins with a short hike on an interesting trail. We will be spotting the Peruvian National Bird – Andean Cock of the rock. The zone is also home to different species of monkeys.

After touring the cloud forest, we will drive you to our lodge. We will be accommodating you in an ensuite room. Later in the evening, our chef will serve a delicious local meal for dinner.

Day 2Paradise Lodge - Palotoa Eco Reserve

After relishing a typical Amazonian breakfast, we will drive you to Atalaya boat pier. On our way, we will have a brief stop at a view point from where you will get a panoramic view of the Amazon jungle and Manu River.

We will be embarking on our motor boat for a ride to our ecological reserve in the Palotoa community. On our way, we will be stopping at Aguas Calientes. It is home to the natural hot springs. You can take a refreshing dip while we will prepare lunch.

Once in our eco lodge, we will be accommodating you in an ensuite room. After dinner, we will head out for a short night tour to spot some reptiles and insects.

Day 3Palotoa Eco Reserve - Campsite

After breakfast, we will start our third day by hiking further deep into the pristine areas of the Amazon Rainforest.

On our way, we will be passing through different medicinal plants. Our guide will be explaining its uses. Natives in Amazon rely on natural medicines to cure their sickness.

For the night, we will be camping amidst the Amazon Rainforest.

Day 4Campsite - Machuwasi Lake

You will be waking up to the sound of chirping birds. We will then hike through a different trail back to our lodge. During this hike you will be able to spot different animal species including black caimans.

Once in our lodge, we will serve breakfast. You will then have the morning to yourself to relax amidst the Peruvian Amazon.

After lunch, we will be travelling on a native balsa raft to spot more birds and animals. After witnessing the sunset, we will return to the lodge. We will be setting a campfire and will have some drinks and barbecue.

Day 5Macaw Clay Lick - Cusco

An unmissable sight on your tour to Manu National Park. Early in the morning, we will be riding to see Macaws Clay Lick.

Hundreds of Macaws and Parrots fly here in the morning to eat the clay. The clay here contains distinct salt that helps them to flush out toxins from their body. This is one of the best things to see on your trip in Peru.

After this, we will return to the lodge where breakfast will be served. We will then check out and take the boat back to Atalaya port on alto Madre de Dios river. Here we will meet our driver and embark on a journey back to Cusco.

We booked this tour with Encuentros Peru Adventure and it was the best choice. Thanks to Encuentros Peru and their staff who took excellent care from start to the end. I had the chance to spot different species of birds and animals in our tour. Everything from the river to the plant and animal life made this a great trip. Where we saw countless different species around the jungle. Our guide was phenomenal. Overall, really great trip and a really nice company.

The trip was 5 days and it was absolutely amazing, we were a group of 5 and the transport, food and accommodation were fantastic, I can’t fault it. One good thing about this company is that they always use local businesses, from accommodation to boat rentals. The tour is very flexible to do whatever you want to do and on the last night the group decided to walk for a long night and we wanted to camp on the river in tents so that what we did would be unforgettable.
