Tour Details

Maras Moray Tour from Cusco is one of the popular half day tours while you acclimate in Cusco before visiting Machu Picchu. Just as the Cusco City Tour, this trip with our local expert will give you an introduction to the Inca civilization and how farming played a vital role in their life.

Both Maras and Moray are notable archaeological sites in the Sacred Valley of Incas. These are among the most photographed places in Cusco.

Maras:

The salt mines of Maras have existed since pre Inca times. It is passed down in the line of succession. The salt flats are owned by a small group of local communities. At a very young age, they are taught the traditional salt farming methods which were introduced by their ancestors – Pre Incas.

Salt farmers here use the traditional Solar Evaporation Method. They let in the natural spring waters into the geometric shaped salt puddles. Then they wait for the water to evaporate. It leaves behind crystals of salt which is manually scrapped out.

Maras Salt is quite distinct. It is pinkish in colour and tastes a bit different. Locals say that the salt of Maras is very nutritious.

In order to prevent contamination, the authorities restrict the access near the salt puddles. Visitors can now enjoy the sight from a viewpoint.

Moray:

The village of Moray is home to the iconic circular shaped high altitude farming terraces. These circular terraces somewhat resemble the Roman amphitheatre. Moray terraces have different levels dug into the ground.

Each level bears a different temperature which allowed the Incas to experiment with the growth conditions of crops at different climates. This was an agricultural laboratory to Incas. Thanks to this advancement in Incas farming methods, Peru now produces more than 800 varieties of potatoes.

Join us on a half day tour from Cusco to visit the emblematic sites in the Sacred Valley with our local expert and discover more about the Inca civilization.
