Tour Details

Day Trip to Waqrapukara from Cusco is one of the newest activities. This archeological site or the Inca fortress is located to the south of Cusco, in Acomayo province, en route to Puno. The two horn shaped mountain peaks dominate the complex. It sits right in between them. Hence the name Waqrapukara which in Quechua means, horn shaped fortress.

This hilltop fortress nestles at 4150 metres above the sea level amidst the rocky outcrop. It has around eight man made farming terraces with retaining walls. On a recent discovery, the archeologists found a triple jammed door. It is one of a kind of door that the Incas used only in sites with an optimum religious or political value. The Incas also did spiritual ceremony here.

On this full day hike to Waqrapukara from Cusco, we will also be visiting the the picturesque Pomacachi lake before beginning the hike. The trek up the hill offers an enchanting view of the valley below. We will also be stopping to see a cave painting and some rock formations amidst the trek.

A full day, informative and picturesque trek to this lesser known site will surely be he highlight of your trip to Peru.

FAQs

How to get to Waqrapukara?

The best way to reach Waqrapukara is by taking a bus from Cusco to the Sangarara district which is a two hours journey. From here, you will have to take a private vehicle to the starting point of the trek. Please ensure that the driver will be returning at a designated time to pick you up for your return trip. This is quite a secluded place and seldom there are any vehicles.

This was an out-worldly experience. Me and my partner had an amazing time. There were seldom any other tourists so we pretty much had the whole complex to ourselves. Thanks to Jose Luis for an exceptional guide service.
